Builders clean happens in three stages
Most people picture a single clean at the end. In reality, a proper post-construction programme runs in three distinct stages, each with a different purpose.
- Rough clean (during construction): Removing bulk debris, offcuts and packaging so trades can keep working safely. Floors are cleared, bins are managed, and access ways are kept tidy.
- Builders clean (at lock-up): The detailed clean once the major trades are done — removing dust, plaster, paint and adhesive from all surfaces, cleaning windows and frames, degreasing wet areas, and preparing floors.
- Final / sparkle clean (before handover): The finishing pass immediately before the client inspection — polishing glass and fixtures, detailing skirtings and tracks, and removing any last marks so the space presents perfectly.
What a thorough builders clean covers
The detail is where handovers are won or lost. A complete scope typically includes:
- Removal of construction dust from every surface, including high ledges, ducts and light fittings
- Internal and external window, frame and track cleaning
- Removal of paint, silicone, adhesive, stickers and plaster splatter
- Degreasing and sanitising kitchens, bathrooms and wet areas
- Hard-floor stripping, sealing or polishing, and carpet vacuuming or extraction
- Detailing of doors, skirtings, switches, vents and fixtures

Construction dust is fine, abrasive and persistent. Cleaned with the wrong method it simply moves around — settling back onto surfaces hours later and triggering defects at inspection.
